First things first, Know the maps. Knowing the map will allow you to dictate the pace of the game if you become accustomed to the maps and where people will be moving.
- Example: Seine Crossing at Objective C, There are 3 entry points to that cap point. Knowing how to counter and defend each point effectively is how you position your men. One or two on second story drawing fire on the stairs from both staircases and a man in the corner near doorway awaiting any potential flanking. To Effectively attack this position you must grenade the entire middle level while simultaneously rushing. Clearing out the building after you cap the point.
Knowing how each class works and how effective they are in each situation.
Assault: While some prefer med packs, I find them a waste of time and a waste of a man hiding while getting his health back up, the best assault is one who can be versatile and helpful at the same time. Seeing 3 guys dead on the ground but 2 enemies around, either sacrifice yourself and aid these men or quickly take them out (only knowing you can take them out). Positioning them always in the front and never move them near enemy vehicles. Best to have squad Ammo
Engineer: A good class for any player and can be used like the assault class but only difference is that this class should be used first and foremost on any vehicle in the surrounding area. There could be 10 ground troops in the area and 1 guy in a tank, I would rather my tank buster destroy tank then help kill of 10 soldiers. Best to have squad Explosive Dmg
Support: Finding a good support is always hard, having one always dropping ammo boxes aiding his teammates before anything else is what you want in a support gunner. Leave this guy toward the back on a perch or sandbag or at a high point ready to lay down suppressive fire. Only when you have seen a support in short range combat should you think to have him move with the squad. Best to have Squad Flak
Recon: Although I hate this class with a passion, They have their usefulness. It was only recently when @ilordpain used this class did I ever find this class to be worthy of use on the field. Using the MAV to spot enemies while quickly alerting the ground troops to move into position really helps the overall squad. If you have a effective spotter and skilled marksman you will have yourself a good recon class soldier, but if they are not that effective I say scratch the class until you find a man worthy of its use. Best to have squad Sprint
Knowledge of vehicles is important, knowing who is best in a vehicle is also important and could make or break the game. Always allow the better man to fly the heli or jet, or the drive the tank or IRV.
Positioning is critical to this game, having your men split up gives you tactical advantage on flanking and firing ability. Whereas most people bunch up and get killed together because they all deciding to fire inches away from each other not spread out and sometimes firing in front of each other. The two man team allows you stay close but not so close as you will bump into each other, suffer less casualties, and still remain an effective unit.
Example: Having your teammates follow you is all well and good but if they are too close a rocket will drop us both, or a tank shell or mortar or a unfriendly Support mounted near by hosing you scrubs to the pavement. It's best to keep a spread formation at ALL times. One person dying is better than all of you dying, they could be revived... Firing too close to each other might create blockage meaning you are only hitting your teammate and none of your bullets will magically go through him therefore whoever is shooting at you will indeed be the victor.
Most of what a leader is this game deals with is the knowledge aspect of the game, knowing what guys deal better in certain situations and what guys do not. Know the skill of each member, this can help you in game.
By all means if you have a guy who is like me who can be a one man army and is apart of your squad, use him in that manner while you use your other members in another. Allow your teammates to play to their strengths but if you need a ammo/c4 guy then you will have to make a judgement call. My advice if your best guy is assault, keep him that way, let another guy take over support.
Any other questions you may have I will answer and add to this post.
